Fire Prevention Week 2023

COOKING SAFETY STARTS WITH YOU

Has a functioning smoke alarm ever awakened your family during the night, alerting you to a fire in your home? Mine has, and I am thankful!

I wanted to share some important information regarding the significance of working smoke alarms in every home. Studies have shown that working smoke alarms can save lives by cutting the risk of dying in a home fire by half.

To ensure maximum safety, it is recommended to install and maintain smoke alarms in every home. Specifically, smoke alarms should be installed in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Interconnecting all smoke alarms throughout the home provides the best protection, as when one alarm sounds, they all sound.

To prevent nuisance alarms, it is advised to install smoke alarms at least 10 feet (3 meters) away from cooking appliances, particularly in the kitchen area. Additionally, it is crucial to test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button to ensure they are functioning properly.

By following these guidelines, we can significantly enhance the safety of our homes and protect ourselves and our loved ones from the dangers of fire.
